Unconventional Poses

Unconventional poses are fun to explore—especially with creative models. It is easy to get stuck in a rut with poses, and trying something really unusual can be a good way to move beyond that and find some new creative ideas for images.

As mentioned in the previous section, getting two experienced models working together can produce some great unconventional images—but a single model can do that as well. When working with an experienced model who is willing to experiment, I usually just try to provide her with a starting concept and perhaps a prop, then I let her go and just keep shooting as she works. Even something as simple as a chair can spark great ideas in the hands of a creative model. The results can be surprising and will often produce unusual and powerful images. Conversely, an advantage of working with newer or less experienced models is that they usually have fewer preconceptions about what poses are possible—so they sometimes come up with really unexpected ideas. I always encourage my models to continue down the path of creative posing. You never know where it will lead.

The location can also inspire a creative model to come up with unique poses. Even if the initial poses are not really working, they can often generate new ideas that will work well with some minor adjustments. Working with experimental shooting techniques, such as slow shutter speeds or multiple exposures, is another way to expand your creativity and produce unexpected photographs. Ideas for experimental techniques will be discussed more fully later in the book.
